Welcome ISB's new Head of School

By Nick Yates, ISB Communications

A very warm welcome to the International School of Beijing’s (ISB) new Head of School, Daniel Rubenstein. This morning, Mr. Rubenstein met with ISB parents and discussed developments on campus at the latest Head of School Coffee. This was his first big in-person event with parents after he recently arrived in China from the U.S. and finished quarantine.

Mr. Rubenstein’s succession as ISB’s Head of School was announced by the ISB Board of Trustees in September 2020, after more than 60 applicants for the position were considered in a process that gathered views from the entire ISB community. Over the summer and since the start of this academic year, Mr. Rubenstein performed his ISB leadership role remotely due to Covid-19 travel restrictions. Online meetings with colleagues, parents, and students allowed him to be fully involved in preparations for 2021-2022 and with managing the challenging and joyful learning taking place on campus since September 1 of this year.

Everyone at ISB is delighted to have him here now!

Mr. Rubenstein told parents at the Head of School Coffee, “It’s been quite a journey and I’m humbled and inspired by all the work it took to get me here.” He thanked ISB’s human resources and government affairs staff for their assistance with the administrative requirements of entering China, and he praised the leadership team for their roles in managing the school together with him since his appointment.

Joining ISB’s high-caliber school leadership team, Daniel Rubenstein has almost 30 years of experience in various teaching and administrative roles in schools in New York, Washington D.C., and in China. Prior to joining ISB, he was the co-founder and CEO of Prospect Schools, one of the highest-performing school networks in New York and among 16 “Schools of the Future” named by the World Economic Forum. You can read about some of the experiences that have inspired Mr. Rubenstein’s approach to education in this interview he conducted with ISB student journalists.

ISB is an extraordinary school, made so by a tradition of educational excellence spanning 40 years. Establishing, nurturing, and growing such an exceptional learning community has been and remains intentional; we work hard to build strong relationships so our learning is at its best.
