Monday Memory: ‘A beautiful new courtyard’

By Sam Wong, ISB Alumni Relations, and Nick Yates, ISB Communications

Members of the International School of Beijing (ISB) community all have their favorite corners of the campus. For Cara Tebo, a High School counselor from 2005 to 2018, it was this courtyard area, which she snapped a picture of as it was being renovated for the school’s 35th anniversary.

During a busy day, “I was able to look out at this beautiful new courtyard and feel a sense of peace and tranquility,” said Cara. She watched the square’s refreshed look (picnic tables, landscaping, plus a fountain gifted by the PTA) take shape as workers planted a tree that has only become stronger and more striking in the five years since.

The square is a storied part of the school. It was the main entrance area when ISB first moved to this site in Shunyi district in 2001. It has hosted many special events and group photos over the years.

Cara Tebo attended many of them, and such occasions have helped leave a lasting impression on her. “My heart swells with fond memories of the relationships and connections created with colleagues, staff, and the Chinese community,” she said. “I love and appreciate how you can meet someone that worked at ISB and… we have an instant bond. You’re a part of the ISB club and you’ll be friends forever.”

ISB is proud to be marking its four decades of existence this year. In 2020-2021, everyone is invited to join in celebrating the anniversary through a range of events. Check out the Celebrating 40 web page for more details. Thank you to everyone who has submitted photos and memories of ISB and made this series of articles possible. Look out for some of the photos and memories being included in the upcoming Celebrating 40 Exhibition.

ISB is an extraordinary school, made so by a tradition of educational excellence spanning 40 years. Establishing, nurturing, and growing such an exceptional learning community has been and remains intentional; we work hard to build strong relationships so our learning is at its best.
